Well, I haven’t read all of McCarthy, but the books I haven’t read I’m saving for the future. I’m really enjoying the later works of his, and I’d like to have some books lined up with the same sort of gravity as something like The Crossing, though I’m *not* particularly asking for westerns. I read 2666 by Robert Bolaño recently, and some of my other favorites include John Williams and JD Salinger.

I feel like I have glaring holes in my knowledge of literature, so any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

    1. This is maybe a little random because it’s a very different genre, but I think Gene Wolfe’s work has some similarities to McCarthy. That sense of being swept along in a world that feels familiar but alien, where you’re not quite sure whether you understand what’s actually happening, with beautiful and sort of anachronistic writing.

On the flip side, Denis Johnson reminds me a lot of McCarthy’s more Southern/Appalachian stuff like “Suttree”.
