I’m reading Les Miserable and I’m at the point where it’s talking about a covenant (p.500ish) that isn’t around anymore. This after a long read about the battle of Waterloo. all in the Cosette chapter where I feel like she has the smallest part in the whole chapter so far.
This is after reading in detail about a priest that just kind of dies off screen and some dudes rambling about who knows what and just dipping out the story.
Guess my question is does any of this stuff actually matter to what I think is the story of Jean?

Wait until the long loving section about the Paris sewer system.
There are abridged versions that just contain the actual plot.
No. But true fans love every word.
*Les Mis* could be 1/3 of its length and be a great book. At full length it’s a slog.
No, Victor Hugo just got excited and wanted to share what he’s learned. Get ready for the 100 page saga of the Paris sewer system…
That’s one of the hallmarks of Hugo. The rabbit trails give you a great appreciation for the setting ofhte story.
Victor Hugo is basically the French Herman Melville.
