I would like to have one about a popular case, so I can search more about it after reading it and see if there’s a documentary about it, get as much information as possible.

Homegrown: Timothy McVeigh and the Rise of Right Wing Extremism. Really enjoyed this one. Obviously it’s about the Oklahoma City Bomber and I found it to be really interesting in-depth.

I’ll Be Gone In The Dark by Michelle McNamara about her quest for finding out who the Golden State Killer is.
Edit to say: there’s tons of podcasts about it, interviews with her husband about her work on it after she died while finishing writing the book. There’s also a doc by the same name on HBO. Definitely a deep rabbit hole you can go down.

For a crime novel that’s as much about the detectives as it is about the crime, ‘The Cuckoo’s Calling’ by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling) is my recommendation. The character-driven narrative focuses on a down-on-his-luck private investigator, Cormoran Strike, and his quest to uncover the truth behind a supermodel’s suicide.

The Devil in the White City. Note- it’s about a real serial killer with some fiction/dramatization added to it.
