Help me find a book

When I was younger (back in the 90s) I read a book about space soldiers that were fighting against these aliens.
The biggest detail I remember from the book was that the soldiers would occasionally step on these landmines. But instead of blowing up, the land mine would basically unlock the deepest fear of the soldier in their mind.

But for the life of me over the past handful of years I cannot remember/nor find anywhere online the name of this book.

Does anyone know what book this is?
