    1. Classic or contemporary? I’d recommend Edogawa Rampo. Maybe start with his short stories. I also always recommend Rynosake Akutagawa. Try his The Hell Screen and see if you like it.

    2. To clarify, by ‘literature’ do you mean just literary fiction? If not, perhaps The Honjin Murders or something by Keigo Higashino.

      Some names: Junichiro Tanizaki, Natsume Soseki, Yasunari Kawabata, Kobo Abe, Kenzaburo Oe.

      Each of these authors has written at least one work considered a classic of Japanese literature. I encourage you to indulge your curiosity and explore!
