I have a stack of books to get through but theyre all either emotionally or mentally taxing lol. I feel like I need a buffer in between them. I like mysteries, and I like the idea of cozy mysteries, but for so many of them I can’t get past the whole *ultra*-cutsey thing. (you know, “murder and muffins”, “puppies and poison” etc.) I’m sure some of them are very clever, but I just can’t get past that. I’m looking for some mysteries with a lower-stakes atmosphere and a little humor, but still serious enough. Bonus points if it’s a quaint town setting!

    Thanks!!

The Thirteenth Tale is pretty cozy. It has some non cozy themes and gets a bit dark, but the overall story is very comfy/bookstore/reading by the fire.

Martin Walker’s Chief Bruno series, now known as the Dordogne mysteries. Set in the Perigord region of France, lots of food and rural life to go along with the mystery.
