Recently a guy in my class asked me for book recommendations to get into reading. This took me a little aback, considering the request came from the clown of the class. I don’t know him well enough as we interact very little, so I have no idea what he might enjoy.

As mentioned, he is quite the jokester and has never really put much energy into school work. Despite being polar opposites I enjoy the few interactions we have because he is not just funny in a plain and childish way but he’s witty. He’s much smarter than what other classmates give him credit for and probably a better listener than half of them. However I don’t know what might catch his interest. He has stated multiple times he doesn’t really like reading, which is why I was surprised he’d ask me for recommendations to get into reading. I guess I didn’t expect it coming from him.

He is an 18 year old guy and has most likely never read a book out of own volition while I’m a 17 year old girl who reads almost anything. I’m mostly into boring, character driven fiction books with miserable characters. I’m sure they wouldn’t sound enjoyable to someone like him. At the moment I’m reading Anna Karenina, which is certainly more appealing, but I’d feel terrible recommending such a long book to someone who’s never bothered much with school and is just starting reading.

This is our last year of high school and I guess I’d like to be remembered as a girl who once gave a good book recommendation to someone who dislikes reading. I most likely won’t stay in touch with him but it feels nice to know I am remembered by someone for something even if we take different paths in life.

I’m going to recommend Space Team by Barry Hutchinson – it’s funny, has some really great characters and interesting things to say.

If he decides he’d rather try fantasy to sci fi then Kill The Farm Boy is a similar light style with interesting characters but fantasy.

Holes by Louis Sachar! It’s my go to book rec for people who want to get into reading because it appeals to all ages, has really short chapters, and it super engaging.
