I love books about prophets and messiahs, ideally ones that have a dark twist, false prophets, philosophical themes
Some that fit this category that I enjoy:
1. Prince of Nothing and Aspect Emperor series by Bakker
2. …
I thought I had more to list. I also love fiction books about religious misconceptions such as:
1. Prince of Nothing and Aspect Emperor series by Bakker
2. A short stay in hell
Ive been looking at Alamut, The Lunar Trilogy, Behold the man.
I hope I’ve gotten across what I’m looking for. Thanks in advance

Dune
Richard Bach’s **Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah**
The word *Adventures* is a stretch. *Impressions* would be a better description.
The Alchemist but it doesn’t have a dark twist
Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Not exactly what you asked for, but a better game in a close enough ballpark.
Nobel Prize in Literature winner (2018) Olga Tokarczuc wrote The Books of Jacob, “a 912-page novel…Its title subject is Jacob Frank [an historical figure] Polish Jew who claimed to be the messiah.” I don’t know that it is entirely historically or theologically accurate he claimed to be the messiah, but close enough for our purposes.
Books of Jacob by Olga Tockarzuck!
The Chronicles of The Black Company by Glen Cook
Behold the Man by Michael Moorcock.
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Friend by Christopher Moore
The Gospel According to Jesus Christ by Jose Saramago
