I keep thinking it’s going to get better. And then it doesn’t.

Sometimes you don’t know until the end. I also rate books a three when they are not great, but I sort of enjoyed them, like entertainment without much substance, or if they are just ok.I also rate books which I can recognise are good, but I didn’t particularly enjoy a three.

Almost always it’s the last 1/3 to 1/4 that makes a book rating drop for me. My lower ratings are usually because of either a rushed ending or the author expecting me to give them too much leeway for a plot hole or implausible conclusion.

Sometimes you feel there’s potential despite the flaws and you want to see it through to see if it can live up to that.
Sometimes it starts out well and then takes a downward turn (or the end ruins it).
Sometimes it’s just the sunk cost fallacy in action.
Sometimes you keep reading because it’s like watching a car crash.
Sometimes you just power through on spite.

I generally stop if I’m not feeling it, but sometimes I finish a book I don’t like just to say I’ve read it. Like The Great Gatsby. I give it 2 stars for story, but I powered through it because it’s such an important book in American culture and I wanted to add to my list of classics read.
Sometimes I keep going because I’m in awe of how bad the book is. It’s similar to hate-watching a show, I guess.

For me 3 stars means that I enjoyed the book, but it lacked substance and/or writing was not great, but overall an ok book. Sometimes I aim to read what I predict to be a 3 star book, when I want a fast and light read.

I’ll stick with things about half way through before I might give up.
My partner can’t put down things he’s started. Some sort of sunk cost fallacy. It gives him anxiety about starting things in case he doesn’t like them.
That and I can usually find a way to enjoy even garbage stuff While I read it. It’s the retrospect that kills it afterward.
And … Sometimes you read something and you like it and then the ending undermines your whole concept of what you were reading and what you thought was super neat about it.

For me 3⭐️ was fine, I’m not going to recommend it to anyone but I finished it. It’s also a really average score, not every story you read is going to be phenomenal and memorable

I don’t think 3 stars is a bad rating. For me, a 3 stars means I enjoyed the book but probably wouldn’t reread. It might be something like a side character was too annoying, but I still enjoyed it. Or the plot was amazing but characters lacked depth. There have been many books that I rate 3 stars and liked reading but are not anything special.

I rarely do, usually if it’s lower than a 3 it’s because I hate finished it and it was a quick read OR I liked the first half but not the second or the ending, but was close enough to finishing that I didn’t DNF.

I look for the audiobook and listen to it at 3x speed 😅🍷

A 3 star for me is a good, enjoyable book. A 2 star read is okay, sometimes even good if I rate it lower because of some problematic elements or something similar. If I really hate something in the first half I stop, but books often start out being 2 stars and end at a 3 or even higher. And a 3 star for me is always worth reading, even if it’s not life-changing or memorable.

I have to really struggle with a book to dnf it. I tend to give authors leeway if only one element (between plot, characters, and world-building) of their story is bad. The only thing that will completely keep me from a book is truly atrocious grammar. I’ve finished quite a few 3 star books, and even a handful of 2 stars. I’ve even forced myself to finish a few 1 star books just so I could give what I felt to be an honest review. This only works for me because I have a lot of free time; the busier I am, the less willing I am to finish a bad book.
