… and I’m super disappointed.
Found myself altogether uninterested in the characters. There was barely any worldbuilding and definitely nothing unique. The whole magical war background felt entirely bland—we never see the main antagonist or what he can truly do and he certainly doesn’t feel scary or even intriguing. And why, in a world full of magic, is the fighting just in trenches and with regular people??
I hated the stupid siren warning—oh, they go off and you know you have exactly X minutes before so-and-so happens…. So there’s no fear. And nothing ever goes wrong with that.
Also, There is NO buildup to the end of the book, with her brother being evil and fighting for Dacre. I saw it coming because the book is predictable. It just had me rolling my eyes.
The only thing I liked about this book was the premise and how the ML is actually respectful… generally. And there’s some good prose, but how many times do people need to be limned or gilded in light?!
Otherwise, feel like I’m going crazy seeing all the positive reviews about this book, even from people I trust. I really can’t understand HOW people love this book so much (though if you did, please tell me why!)
Any thoughts?
