Hi. I recently finished *Invisible Ink* by Patrick Modiano, and while I enjoyed the book I have a few questions about some of the seemingly unresolved part of the mystery. It’s hard to find discussions about this book online, so hopefully someone here has read it.
Spoilers:
1. What’s the deal with Gerard Mourade? We are warned by Roger he has a tendency to make up stories, but The Marquis presents a lot of interesting info on him in the newpaper clipping. Why did he claim to not remember Noelle when Jean finds him outside the pharmacy? Why was he leaning on someone? Who was he leaning on – was that one of the kidnappers described in the newspaper clipping?
2. Did Noelle actually write in her datebook with (literal) invisible ink? Jean mentions later that he “swears it wasn’t there before” and some text is written in a much paler, barely visible blue ink. If so, why?
3. Who was the man that took Noelle’s datebook from her, and why was it found in a secret compartment in her apartment?
