For reference I’ve read Blood and Beauty by Sarah Dunant, and I’ve just finished The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell. Was thinking of starting something by Umberto Eco but what I’m really after is narrative nonfiction (whether it’s a biography or covers a specific point in Italian history, preferably before the 18th century). If not I’m totally open to historical fiction. Any recommendations?
