Okay so I like books that have a good message, and make you think (fiction or non-fiction) and I also like books that just have a good plot, an adventure, plot twist, mystery you name it.
On paper, I’m looking for something like The Midnight Library. It’s supposed to be an adventure book that has good messages. But I’d rate The Midnight Library as a 3/5. It’s a little too on the nose for me and it seems like the author just wanted to write a self-help book, and then wrote a fictional story around it. The Alchemist feels similar but I do like it slightly better.
A book that I love is East of Eden. The plot is great, but there’s lots of good dialogue that is highlightable, makes you pause and think, then continue reading. Now I’m not necessarily looking for a book like East of Eden, but rather pointing out the differences of writing between The Midnight Library and East of Eden.
I also like deep characters, clever plans, mysteries, plot twists etc.
