This is weirdly specific, but I’ve discovered I love stories that feature characters who were sent on some sort of mission or trip to a remote area only to be more or less abandoned by the authority that brought them there.
Some books I’ve enjoyed recently:
-*Our Wives Under the Sea* by Julia Armfield, about a trio of scientists who gets stranded on a deep-sea submersible after losing communication with the organization who hired them.
-*Small Game* by Blair Braverman, about a group of contestants on a reality survival show who get abandoned in the woods.
-*The Last Passenger* by Will Dean, about a group of people on a cruise ship who wake up to find all of the other passengers missing.
Other media that scratch this same itch for me are the movies *Oldboy*, *Inside* (2023), and *Vivarium*, as well as the games *Green Hell* and *Alien: Isolation*.
Would love to hear any suggestions of books that fit a similar niche!

The Last One by Alexandra Oliva has a similar premise to Small Game.
Fiction or non-fiction? If you are up for non-fiction, I just read Empire of Ice and Stone by Buddy Levy about an Arctic expedition where the organizer just heads back home “to hunt caribou” after the ship gets stuck in the ice and leaves all the other scientists and explorers behind
You should watch the black mirror episode uss callister 😀
