I read a lot of thrillers and some historical fiction. I want to get into more fantasy, but I often have a hard time understanding it. I don’t mind YA.
I don’t particularly care for romance. But is okay if it’s not a central theme.

What about The first 15 lives of Harry August by Claire North.
Somewhat historical in that the MC relives his life over and over starting in the 1920’s. There’s some thriller style stuff going on – bit of detective work, a few murders, a climatic face off.
Alternatively something like The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden – based on Russian folklore and history.
If you want to go full new fantasy world but a fairly quick read that stands on its own well try Sabriel by Garth Nix
Give Six of Crows a shot. It’s a hiest story that has magic but it isn’t the central thing. Very good, very fast, and Very fun
Why not try A Song of Ice and Fire? It feels a lot like historical fiction, has some murder mysteries that need to get solved, the magic isn’t all over the place, and most importantly – the writing is excellent!
