No romance, just something deep. Not necessarily very sad, but thought provoking. Nothing pretentious or edgy. I just want it to make me feel something
How about A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith?

Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. Maybe a tad too sad though. Still a great read if you want to feel something.

It’s a classic but Metamorphosis by Kafka is a great short read.
If you’re into historical fiction, I’d recommend any Khaled hosseini books, The Book Thief, All The Light You Cannot See, The Help and Things Fall Apart. They’re all sad but amazing.
Otherwise, A Man Called Ove.

I’m still thinking about this book a month later.
