I am serial book-cover judger. I honestly feel that in many cases you CAN judge a book by the cover, though obviously that’s not always the case. A lot of times friends or family will suggest a book to me, and i can immediately tell that i will hate it just by the cover art. I’m curious to know what other people’s cover turn offs are!

Mine are like those cartoon romance covers where no one has a face and there’s cursive all over it, and then also just straight up photos of a model or random person meant to portray the main character. I also usually avoid covers that have a woman in sunglasses on them (besides My Sister the Serial Killer). Idk why.

However recently i realized how much i prefer to see straight up stock photos of abs on the cover of a book over the cartoonized ones, and i don’t even read romance. Its just nostalgic.

    1. Covers of people that are meant to look sexy, but they’re always really oily looking? Why is their skin so wet?
Basically the cover of every urban fantasy novel from the late 90s to like 2015.

    2. I have come to hate photo covers with the characters on them. I feel like they rob me of the chance to imagine the characters themselves.

      I go toward illustrations more.

Historical fiction with modern people playing dress up, with modern hair cuts, American teeth and clothing 30 or 40 years out of period.

    4. I put off reading legends and lattes until I could get the Uk edition used because the normal US artwork just turned me off so much I didn’t even want it as my Lock Screen on my kindle (I feel terrible because it’s such a dumb hang up and I don’t seem to see anyone who felt the same way)

I’m not a fan of character art on the cover in general. Even if it’s good art it still limits the imagination. Even if it’s just faceless cartoons it still gives you some type of information, like skin color.
