Ok this title’s a bit confusing but hear me out.
Basically what I’m looking for are fantasy books that have a bit more levity/humour in it, young adult characters and are maybe on the shorter side. Essentially, books that literally aimed at “young adults” – but notably without the more tropey aspects that tend to dominate the category (love triangles, self insert protagonists, teenagers sucessfully taking over the world)
This was mainly inspired by me reading the locked tomb trilogy and gentlemen bastards series last year, both of which are series that I’ve seen people classify as being “YA”, despite not hitting a lot of the more tropey criteria. It made me realise that, being a teenager myself, I do actually enjoy less heavy (in tone, not overall thematically) and more slightly “relateable” fantasy. I’ve just been put off by the tropes broadly associated with that style of fantasy, and would love some reccomendations for similar books.
For broader context, I’m a big fan of a lot of terry pratchetts work, and by extention neil gaiman. I’m also working my way through the mistborn trilogy (really enjoyed the first, second feels like a bit more of a slog but the sequal trilogy looks really interesting). Any reccomendations are appreciated!
