This community never fails me, so here I am again lol. I’m looking for fantasy books that have a romantic subplot. I do not want the romance to dominate the story. Instalove is an absolute no for me. I need to be sold on the characters as individuals for me to care about their relationship, so strong character development is also a must. Also, please no bruiting assholes as love interests. I’m looking at you, ACATAR. I want to see dialogue between the love interests that demonstrates what they are like as a couple. What’s their banter like? What kind of conversations do they have? In what ways do their personalities compliment each other? How do they handle conflict? If the majority of the couple’s time is spent having sex, I’m not interested. Extra points for LGBT+ relationships.
As for fantasy elements I’m looking for, I’m a lot more open. I enjoy world building, but for this particular craving I want something that weaves the world building into the progression of the plot. I find that Fonda Lee is phenomenal at this. It never feels too heavy handed in her books. I also think the battle/magic school trope is inherently suited for this kind of world building, but recs exclusively with this trope are not required. While I’ve enjoyed some YA like Traci Dionne’s Legendborn, I’m avoiding YA for this particular request. I’m happy to be proven wrong, but YA never does romance right. Anyway, this post is long enough, so I’ll leave it at that. I’m happy to specify my preferences further, or to give examples of books I’ve enjoyed in the past if needed.
TIA 🙂
