I don’t know if you like what I call ‘lacey’ language, but I started reading in ’22 and my aim was, and still is classic literature. I would recommend Charles Dickens David Copperfield, although it does go on. Eventually I found Middlemarch which I really enjoyed, but be aware that it’s not a beginning, middle and end type plot, it’s a reflection on goings on on a particular place, with half a dozen main characters. Also I loved my foray into Dostoevsky’s and Tolstoy’s literature. Good luck!
