I loved this book so much! It was so unexpected and I loved how many different elements/classic storylines seemed to naturally come together.
I think the surprising part to me was that it is in the usual category of fiction I enjoy (LGBTQ+ about POC/working class people) but I didn’t expect it to go that way at all? The religious undertones were less pushy and more thematic ties and I appreciated that a lot.
I haven’t seen any posts about it on here but it’s one of the best books I’ve ever read. Fiction about young adults without being young adult fiction, mature themes, heavy feelings, realistic characters. Everything in it comes up extremely naturally – it’s one of the most realistic examples of featuring characters with less-than-mainstream identities and experiences that I’ve read.
If you are considering reading it, here are the trigger warnings: >!alcoholism and drug use, sexual abuse, homophobia, cancer, teen pregnancy and mild abortion mentions, religious undertones (I have religious trauma but didn’t find it triggering and these go away a lot after the first few chapters)!<
