Growing up in my country the nation was 99% white and the rare occasions where I met other ethnicities it was adopted kids or tourists. It was in fact so rare that I remember all non-white people i met from when I start to remember until my teenage years. They were 7. Seven people.
I never realised growing up how racist my culture was, and i guess I didn’t even know what racism was.
Thankfully things have slowly changed for the better regarding diversity in my community.
I have so much to unlearn and so much to learn. I also want so much to be able to educate my children on these issues because they don’t learn anything about it in school and sadly, my country is still very racist, especially the older generations.
The thing is that most people don’t even KNOW that they are racist, just like i didn’t know i was until i started to educate myself.
My biggest problem is that when I start to look up books on these topics there just are sooooo many of them!!
I have adhd so if it’s not engaging i will not be able to keep focus no matter how much I want to learn the contents.
Can you please recommend me a book/books that are educational about race, racism and discrimination and not too dry.
It can also be books (fictional or non) that tell a story from the perspective of a person of a different race/culture than white so that I can see a glimpse into their lives and experiences.
Just drop anything that you think would be helpful and at least a bit entertaining to keep me engaged. Thank you.
