So I’m part of a book club which has been incredible up until now because it’s basically been a “maybe consider sharing what you’re reading for the first 10 minutes” type deal followed by an hour and a half of shit-talking, copious red wine and decadent soft cheeses.
I have really come to love this, despite being 20 years younger than most of the attendees and the only guy to actually show up. The discuss what you’re reading part has even dropped off a little in favour of more of a salon style approach.
I was happy. I was actively telling these lovely women all about Tender is the Flesh and sharing extracts from The Road and reading out The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas. It was great.

Then a new member joined, and she wasn’t contend with our lackadaisical but ultimately productive and enjoyable approach to Book Club. She needs a focus, something to unite the discussion. She wants Tim Winton. We managed to talk her down from wanting everyone to read Cloudtsreet in two weeks, and instead we each get to select something by Tim Winton to bring to Book Club discuss.

I’m not familiar with Tim Winton but I’m open to new experiences, so I guess what I’m looking for, after a venting of my frustration, is a Tim Winton Short Story that is as short as it is engaging.
