as someone who struggles with reading, i devoured all 416 pages of this book in around two or three days over winter break. i loved it *so much*. the characters were dynamic, the plot wasn’t afraid of shying away from the brutality of war, and i was intriguied by the moral grey-ness of the main cast.
what i’m really looking for in recommendations is something that has a similar emotionally charged plot that doesn’t shy away from harsher or darker tones without being overly graphic or barely concealed torture porn. anything where the characters are intriguing and well written whilst also being morally questionable would also be interesting. i loved the light fantasy elements and the historical setting. anything written in a similar style and with queer characters would be a huge boon.
i’m currently planning on getting my hands on the next book in the series, but for the moment being do y’all have any books that you think might be similar? thanks for your input <3

That was a great book, I agree. Loved it. I am reading Iron Widow by Zhao and it is good. Not as good, but it fits your criteria I think. Also, have you read The Broken Earth Trilogy by Jemisin? Very enjoyable read with a strong female lead.
