I’m visiting these cities for the first time so thought it would be fun to read some books set in / about them and perhaps get a bit of insight into the culture and stuff. I’m not strict on being in / about the cities themselves, could be wider country or fantasy based on the cities/countries, but I do want the author to be from or have lived there for a considerable period. (For example, I really enjoyed the seven moons of maali almedia, a fantasy novel set in Sri Lanka.) I’m also not bothered about genre, as long as it’s well-written and engaging (for reference I typically read fantasy, sci-fi, queer, and romance novels – so would probs prefer it if incorporated any of these well).
I have already requested from the library Gweilo: stories of a Hong Kong childhood and city at the end of time for Hong Kong and days at the morisaki bookshop for Tokyo.
