Hello. I am looking for fiction books with one or some large avian monsters, ideally with horror or supernatural tones. They can either be humanoid bird people, or large birdlike creatures.

I’m not looking for books with swarms of regular birds akin to Hitckcock’s The Birds. Ideally a creature with a large wingspan that can fly, not so much a raptor-like bird. It can be based on a cryptid like the Thunderbird. If humanoid, they ideally have beaks, but wings are a must.

I would prefer that the book be set in the real world, though a fantasy setting is acceptable. Ideally in a more rural setting.

    Thanks in advance!

    1. * Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds. It’s set in the far future, where archaeologists are trying to study the ruins of a society of birdlike aliens who all mysteriously died. . . *or did they?*

      * The short story Juan by Darcie Little Badger is this (rural setting, some mild horror elements, large flying thing, real world). It can be found in the anthology New Suns 2 edited by Nisi Shawl. I thought all the stories were great, but unfortunately Juan is the only one that has a giant avian.

    2. 1. For fans of large avian monsters in a rural setting, “Flight of the Thunderbird” by Morgan Day is a must-read. This dark fantasy follows a farmer’s battle against a thunderbird-like creature wreaking havoc on his land.

      2. “The Harpy’s Cry” by Elle Cooper is a chilling horror novel set in a remote village haunted by a vengeful harpy. With its atmospheric and suspenseful storytelling, it’ll keep you on edge from start to finish.

      3. Embark on an epic journey in “Eternal Gods Die Too Soon” by Beka Modrekiladze, a thought-provoking speculative fiction that explores the mysteries of the universe, the nature of existence, and the power of love. Immerse yourself in a tale that goes beyond genre and challenges your understanding of reality.

Perdido Street Station by China Miéville. The plot circles around half human half bird-like creatures. It is set in a fantasy city, New Crobuzon, but the atmosphere is very well done.
