Especially textbooks or anything academic. I’ll have to whisper the text, because otherwise my eyes would pass over the text and I’ll understand only the gist. This has been going on for years and I get tired quickly doing this and end up with a dry mouth. My hands shake after doing this for some reason, as if I’m hyperventilating. It is also embarrassing to do in public and can be quite distracting to those nearby, so I often abstain entirely from reading when I take public transport (which I do very often).

Ive been trying to read silently for a while now but I’m really struggling. I should also mention English isn’t my 1st language. Help lol (edit: this is a serious post)

There is some suggestion that reading aloud was a common thing to do in the ancient world. We can see examples of this from as far apart as the biblical Acts of the Apostles and the Confessions of St Augustine. So, silent reading may be something that comes less naturally to people and so requires more effort to attain. Having said which most people do attain to it because it is the most convenient way to read in the sort of world which we now inhabit. It may be that once you develop the habit, after a time of struggle and suffering then it will begin to come more easily to you. Or it may be that there is some block, psychological or neurological, which is affecting you and that you would benefit from some sort of therapy from a suitably trained professional.
