So Iong story short I never really learned to read in school, I always relied on friends or a screen reader and kind of hacked my way through life. It does not affect me professionally because I kind of learned to pretend to read but I’m kind of jealous when the person beside me on a plane is reading a book and obviously enjoy it. Has anyone learned reading as an adult? How does one begin to do so?

There are adult programs to learn to read. I would ask a public librarian where to go in your city or county.
I’m afraid that the format you have chosen won’t be accessible. If you can’t read, how will you know this isn’t an answer to your question?
Go to the library. They have programmes for adult learners and will gladly help you out.
If you don’t have a library near by try contacting one of the many librarians on instagram and tiktok, I’m sure some of them will know of a good programme for you
McGuffey Eclectic Readers are a great place to start.
Ask the librarian to show you programs on the public access computer specifically designed to help those with reading variabilities.
Maybe there is a reason you prefer to glance versus read straight on? A whole new world awaits.
So, did someone else post for you? If not how did you post? how you plan to get the answers? sorry for not providing a answer
Do you want to teach yourself or get some in person help? Adult learning programs can help if you want to go in person. Otherwise, there are tons of apps designed to teach basic reading skills: Duolingo ABC, Hooked on Phonics, Reading Eggs, etc.
Once you’ve mastered the basics, hit up the library as they can give you books that are level appropriate. The more you read the more you’ll advance.
Also, some authors write tongue in cheek children’s books that are really meant for adults. Go The Fuck To Sleep, Uncle Shelby’s ABZs, etc might at least be more interesting of a read. Once you’re a more secure reader, some young adult books can be great – anything by Roald Dahl is still fantastic to read as an adult but will be less dense than some adult fiction.
Many places will have adult literacy programs. That will definitely be the best place to start. They will also be able to work out if there was something that was never diagnosed back at school that prevented you from learning, like dyslexia.
I think it’s great that you have decided to learn a new skill check your community/local collage as they may have classes
OP, whatever the fuck you do… go down this path. No matter how hard it may be. It will be the literal greatest gift you’ll ever give yourself. Respect to you for fixing it.
How did you write this if you can’t read?
