Another example, Michele from Moravia’s Indifferenti. I’m looking for books with protagonists that struggle with the dichotomy of thought and action. Hamlet and Michele are lost in thought and physiologically unable to bring about physical actions that would fulfill some inner desire of theirs. Raskolnikov and Michele are also highly idealistic, reflecting on the decadence of material life and the greatness of some higher image or essence of man and truth that transcend their surrounding context, almost a metaphysical search. A bit different, but Jacob in The Slave also turns to metaphysical truths in religion to escape the brutality of the physical massacre that unfolds before him. Basically any suggestion with highly introspective characters that sort of fall into this domain would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
