I have a theory about reading books in general. I have ADD and so 90% of the time I’m using an assistive device to read books to me while I follow along or I’m using audiobooks.

Weeks ago I reserved an ebook copy of a book that was recommended because the audiobook had a really long line on Libby. I read about four chapters, hated it and returned it to the library forgetting I also had the audiobook still on hold.

Got the audiobook today and I decided to give it a spin since I just finished a different book.

It’s great. It’s a fantastic story. It’s read by a narrator with a Scottish accent and that made all of the difference. The sentence structure, the (made up) names of Gods all of it is much much much less annoying when it’s read in a voice different than the one in my head.

So I wonder – with all of the pressures in the world and with reading books that are largely written in a very American style or voice how many critiques would completely flip if audiobooks were more assessable.

Perhaps there’s so much going on in the world and we’re under such pressure from all directions that it’s hard to really get into things.
