I recently went through a good chunk of r/megalophobia and I remembered that I really really like the vibes of giant ruins. It’s my favorite kind of thing to see in movies or video games, but I haven’t really read any books that can give me the same feeling. Think like the big crystal heads and statue guardians in Atlantis? Or pretty much everything about the scenery in Halo? The Jedi Temple? If you’ve ever played Genshin Impact, the Khaen’riah door and the celestial nails in Dragonspine/The Chasm are some of my favorite places in the game. I just started playing Warframe yesterday (I saw a cool cosplay and hit download when I saw the word “free”) and I’m not even through the tutorial but the vibes are already delicious. Ramiel from Neon Genesis Evangelion??? She counts too, albeit loosely because she’s more of an mutated human than a building. Ra’s ship in Stargate (giant glowing pyramid anyone?) would be a good fit. Bonus points if the giant statues and monuments make ominous noises like the one in Fablehaven (I can’t remember which book it’s in, but that’s the only time I can remember reading a book with weird ominous noise-making ruins). Or am I remembering the noises because my brain automatically added them???? It’s been a while. Extra bonus points if there are ancient immortal protectors associated with the ruins!!!

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for the help

    1. The Memoirs of Lady Trent series by Marie Brennan has several books with ruins in them. And a book with a big, huge, swampy jungle and one mostly on an island, but there are still some ruins.

      No noise, though.

    2. The Corean Chronicles by L.E. Modesitt, Jr is set in a post-magical apocalypse world with ruins of the former world present.
