I dropped it years ago but recently found my copy with a bookmark stuck 70% of the way through it. I knew the plot twist before even starting the novel, and I knew Jane ended up marrying Rochester, but I didn’t expect it to romanticize their relationship so much and it ended up making me mad enough that I ditched it. It’s a product of its time, but was it really not considered at all gross that a man was courting the 18 yr old orphan that worked for him while having a secret crazy wife? or is their “forbidden love” just the Victorian version of smut? I just can’t imagine the novel being able to redeem itself, Unless Jane’s marriage to Rochester is framed as a tragedy.
