I like a bit of genre mixing. Like how Firefly is a western that takes place in space, or how Blade Runner is like an old-school film-noir movie set in a futuristic-cyberpunk setting.
I like detective books and I like fantasy, especially medieval fantasy.
The closest I can think of at this moment is Geralt from the Witcher series, since he is essentially a hard-boiled detective. He has to investigate what kind of monster he’s hunting, how it kills it’s victims, and how he has to kill it.
Are there any similar stories to that but maybe with a longer plot?

The de facto answer is the *Garret P.I.* series by Glen Cook
These might be better classified as contemporary urban fantasy / speculative fiction but—
* *The City And The City*, China Miéville – Inspector Borlú investigates a murder—but to complicate the case, his city of Besźel co-exists in both spatial and temporal parallel with the city of Ul Qoma… and where does the mythical interstitial city of Orsiny fit in?
* *Zoo City*, Lauren Beukes – In a fantastical alternate version of Johannesburg where criminals are « animalled » (*assigned animal familiars which give them certain powers*) a pop star goes missing! Can the feisty ex-journalist Zinzi December find her?
* *Rivers Of London series*, Ben Aaronovitch – it’s a London in which each river has its (outspoken) goddess, and in which ghosts and vampires and leprechauns and cheeky fox-spirits (and other eldritch creatures) keep life interesting for young Peter Grant of the Metropolitan Police. Nine books so far, with more on the way!
