Just finished These Violent Delights a little bit ago and there’s not a lot that happens in terms of plot throughout much of the book. There are a lot of scenes that you could argue are significant to character development but any number of them individually could probably be cut without losing anything. I’m also reminded of certain scenes in Wonder Boys, like when Grady visits his wife’s family for seder. It probably says something about his character (it’s been a long time since I read it) but not sure it’s anything much more than is revealed elsewhere and the whole section wasn’t included in the film version without much consequence to the effectiveness of the story. Are there any of these quiet, slower scenes that you would consider very well done or significant in some way even if they don’t drive the plot much?

    1. Just rewatched Dune part 1. The dinner scene in Arrakeen that was not in the movie. While not super important to the overall plot, it gives important context about the different factions and the powers at play.

The chapter in The Grapes of Wrath where the turtle crosses the road. Yes, it’s just about a turtle dodging cars, but in the long run, isn’t it a metaphor for the Joad family’s struggle?

The dialogue heavy scenes in Crime and Punishment. I was about to annotate them as confusing or irrelevant and then as I read further, I saw how important they were to the overall narrative. I had a lot of misconceptions about what it’s actually about. I’m almost finished with it but I can’t choose any scene, no matter how boring, that I would edit out.
