    1. Thomas Perry is a master of the pursuit novel. (He even has one called _Pursuit_.)

Pretty much all of his books feature this concept, except for some of his earlier ones. To see if you’re interested in his style, I recommend checking out his Jane Whitefield series. But you would probably be satisfied by anything he’s written in the last thirty years. Lots of technical detail and compelling assessments of unique situations filled with intelligence and improvisation.

The pursuits don’t always feature law enforcement vs a criminal, but they often do. Two recent ones in this vein are _A Small Town_ and _The Murder Book_. Also his recurring series about a hitman (Butcher’s Boy) has an interesting FBI agent foil.

There is also a classic of this genre that has been reprinted often, Geoffrey Household’s _Rogue Male_
