Not sure where to put this discussion but I feel like this is the best one
In some stories, the protagonist feels like a “son” to me, not literally but like I care about his happiness and I truly want a good ending for him/her while in others it feels like I care about the protagonist but only because he/she is interesting. I don’t care if tragic things happen to them, I might cry but I won’t want to turn my eyes away from it. I’m wondering if there’s something about the writing that makes these different or if it is subjective. It’s hard to give examples off the top of my head but I just can’t get this question out of my head, part of my intrusive thoughts I guess (the current work I’m reading isn’t a book per se so I don’t think anyone knows of it)
