I don’t see a lot of male and female best friends, who are also the main characters, in books. It doesn’t matter what the age group is, but I’d prefer YA because it’s easier for me to read. I’m also fine with side romances, just as long as the LI isn’t one of the main characters. (I prefer either queer or no romance however)
