Just finished reading Goblin Emperor and loved it, but I couldn’t shake this feeling that, for a political intrigue book, you pretty much know who’s on Maia’s side and who’s against him right from the get-go. Sure, there are some exceptions, but the main bad guys end up being the ones you knew hated Maia from the start. It feels like the book doesn’t really try to trick you on that front.
It’s true that sometimes people are exactly what they seem but i think the really dangerous ones are often the ones who seem all good but turn out to be evil or super ambitious. That’s why I’m on the hunt for a book where the main character is really kept in the dark and maybe gets played with once in a while.
I loved the vibe of Goblin Emperor, and I prefer it when the main character is fundamentally a good guy, so bonus points if you’ve got any recommendations that fit that bill!
