Strange coincidence and rather unsettling to have finished reading this while the news in Bristol is so full of knife crime and young men killing each other.
The narrator is a drug dealer and murderer, whose mates carry knives routinely and have access to guns. He is part of a rivalry between Stapleton Road and St Paul’s. And the whole thing strikes a little close to the current situation (whatever it is).
The author – Moses Mackenzie – has a clear Afro-Caribbean voice and writes well and was born and grew up in the area he describes. The dialogue is sometimes a bit hard to follow, but there’s no mistaking the general drift.
Glad I read it, but wouldn’t go back to it.
