On my quest to read “the classics”, I’ve finally finished The age of innocence.

It’s not a long read at all, but I am not the most consistent reader and some of the detail on society back then was a little much (which that’s part of the point).

I was drawn to this book because of the movie if I’m being honest. But reading the book gives you all the feelings of the movie but even more so. While the story of Newland and Madam Olenska is enthralling and spicy (for those times), the long drawn out details of each family and society at that time was sometimes too much and I found myself getting bored. The beautiful thing about this story is it really taps into human desire, duty, and what it means to choose duty over what you desire at times.

I shed a tear when Newland was told what May said before her passing, “your father once gave up everything he wanted most”.

The book leaves you with a sense of longing, and unfinished business, but at the same time wraps up beautifully. It’s romantic, it explains the way society was back then and how it changed over time. Overall, I enjoyed this read!
