As the title says, I’m looking for books about doom and gloom. Some of my favorite pieces of media include Fear and Hunger, Ultrakill, Slay the Princess, Suffer the Children (Craig DiLouie), House of Leaves, and When the Wind blows. I also would like some sort of unique concept and premise, I particularly love the setup of weaveworld, an entire world under a carpet. Thanks!

Right now, I am loving Fall of the Guardians by Vanessa White. The book is based on the author’s time in a cult-run military boarding school for troubled girls. The first few chapters are brutal in terms of things they did to those girls in the name of saving them. I don’t normally like first-person narratives, but this one I couldn’t put down. A 300-page book usually takes me a few weeks (I usually have 6 or 7 books going at once that I bounce between). I read this one in a few days and still can’t stop thinking about it.
The part that made me cry was the letters from home chapter, the response letters Vanessa got from others in her program, especially the one from her surrogate little sister. That letter destroyed me emotionally.
I managed to get on as a test reader for the second book. That book tells a different woman’s story of the same place and same time frame. Holly hell, that book is making me seriously question everything I have ever thought I knew about every book I have ever read.
Lapvona and My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh may fit through bill but I haven’t read any of the books you mentioned.
