TLDR:
Having no friends to talk about the English fantasy, Scifi books in the country I’m living. Would there be any tips for such situations?
——
I am currently living in a foreign, non-English speaking country and studying engineering,
I read books partially to practice my English reading but grew up to enjoy reading fantasy and Scifi books, but the problem is – there is no one to talk to about the books I read here.
There aren’t people who read fantasy books such as the wheels of time, witcher, a song of ice and fire etc , nor do people read Sci Fi books like Hyperion, Enders Game etc (Dune and Lord of Rings is pretty much a movie only series, without deep diving). Nobody reads Branden Sanderson, Stephen King etc.
Yes, some translated version of the books do exist but are not popular or well known ( a lot of times, only the first book would be translated for the series without the existing sequel due to lack of sales)
Yes, English online communities and discussions exist, but I want some offline, face to face talk because I want to be more enthusiastic and encouraged, since I’m also planning to be an amateur fantasy, Scifi writer like 8 years later (am developing plots and worldbuilding), so having real friends to share my enthusiasm would be helpful.
Would there be any tips for such situations?
