I’d say I read mostly literary fiction(?) mystery, and horror, but kind of mild horror, authors like Shirley Jackson, Ira Levin, Daphne du Maurier, Anne Rice, and classic books like Dracula, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Phantom of the Opera. Im not too sure some of those even count as horror. I did buy a Steven king novel once but only got through like 20 pages.

I think I’d love a book that’s kind of like a fairytale, one that kind of feels like Heidi or A Room With a View (running around in the grass and stuff) but magical. I also think I’d like a gothic fantasy book like the horror books I listed above and also fairytale-ish. Also open to more typical fantasy books, or stuff in a modern setting as well as historical.

Not really looking for rape or torture or violent gore, or weirdly sexual stories about Disney princesses (Anne Rice’s sleeping beauty thing traumatized me —was not expecting THAT). Regular retellings of Disney stories are fine though, and I’d actually love to read one. Y.A is also fine as long as it has well developed characters and a historical setting.

I’ve already read most of Harry Potter and the chronicles of Narnia

(Everything I’ve just said goes out the window if the book has really beautiful prose)

    1. If you haven’t read it, The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker hits a lot of your check marks. It’s a mix of historical, fantasy, horror.

I got into fantasy with The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. You may like it

Susanna Clark is right up your alley. Piranesi is one of my favorite books from the last few years.
