It has been a long time since I read a novel I enjoy. I liked writing style, dialogue and premise of “The Push” by Ashley Audrain, and really, really disliked the writing style, protagonist, and dialogue of “Kindred” by Octavia E Butler. I need three recommendations for my book club, but I would also just really like a series to enjoy.
(I have not enjoyed any books written by Sarah J Mass, or the Cruel Prince series… honestly maybe it’s a hipster thing, but I personally have not enjoyed any of the popular series from TikTok. I find them incredibly boring and the characters annoying/trope-y. Though I do like fantasy)
Edit: Just for context cause I reread it and it perhaps comes across as complaining about certain books for fun, but I was just mentioning them in case you have read them and know book recs that veer away from the similar plot and char archetypes.

The Eight by Katherine Neville
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter (her Will Trent series is also good)
Before She Disappeared by Lisa Gardner
The She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell
try some of these ladies, all in the business of thriller/mystery: lisa gardner, meg gardiner, patricia highsmith, jan burke, alex kava, faye kellerman, ruth rendell/barbara vine. I wasn’t a fan but sue grafton and/or patricia highsmith and/or karin slaughter might also work.
I love Tana French’s books, they’re detective/crime novels but very character driven and don’t fall into the typical tropes. Her use of language is also beautiful.
Pretty much anything written by Agatha Christie
Try some of these female writers:
Tess Gerritsen – Rizzoli & Isles Series
El Cosimano – Finlay Donovan Series
Patricia Cornwell – Kay Scarpetta Series
Ann Cleeves – Vera Stanhope Series
Christina Lauren for their romcoms
Kathy Reichs – Temperance Brennan (Bones series)
Jeneva Rose
