Hey! I’m looking for a book/book series similar to Game of Thrones but with less condoned sexual assault. I really liked the drama and goreyness and dragons part of the books and the fact that it wasn’t particularly romance heavy but all the non-con sex scenes made me uncomfortable (I’d be more fine with them if they weren’t mostly brushed over, like with the whole ‘Daenerys being only 13 years old’ thing and were actually taken more seriously)

I’m considering reading the Witcher books as I enjoyed the first season on Netflix but my school library doesn’t have that.

If you guys have any suggestions, that’d be very helpful! Thanks!

    1. Loved the Witcher series of books. Dune does a great job with the political intrigue type stuff that GoT does a lot with.

    2. There’s very little out there with the same kind of depth in a fantasy setting, there are other great series, but I haven’t come across anything quiet like GOT, I’ve been reading fantasy a long time and had gone off it for a period before someone recommended GOT.

I’d recommend Joe Abercrombie, it’s not the same, very little political intrigue and stylistically worlds apart, but like GOT it’s also not the same as other typical fantasy. Abercrombie plays with tropes and cliches. He’s one of the early “grimdark” authors with more ambiguous heroes and there’s a dark sense of humour running throughout his books, particularly in the The First Law series. Also one of his main characters, Glokta is as interesting as Tyrion in GOT. There’s very little on the sex side, but there is a lot of violence. It’s an action oriented series.

Just because a book contains certain things doesn’t mean it’s condoned.
