A Short Stay In Hell by Steven Peck is fantastic. It packs a punch in 110 pages (that might be considered a novella rather than a short story?).

Claire Keegan has some stand alone short stories (Foster, Small Things Like These) and a 3-story collection (So Late In the Day). These would likely suit your wife’s interests a little more than yours but they are high quality.

Exhalation by Ted Chiang doesn’t fit either of your criteria but it is too good to leave off the list. The Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu is also great.

Neil Gaiman’s [Smoke and Mirrors](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16790.Smoke_and_Mirrors). Mostly fantasy but veers into horror.

[Dreamsongs](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/417729.Dreamsongs_Volume_I) by George R. R. Martin. He’s a straight up horror writer as well as a fantasy writer. I’d particularly recommend *In The Lost Lands* and *Sandkings*.

Or perhaps this [anthology](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20168816-rogues). *The Grownup* by Gillian Flynn is great. It’s got both horror and humour.

    4. That is so cute.
      I love being read to.
My 1st boyfriend was a drama student who read to me.

The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury is Sci Fi but has stories that run the spectrum from funny to creepy.

Dad is Fat by Jim Gaffigan is probably considered more a collection of Essays than Short Stories but would be great humor for your upcoming parenthood.
