Having burned through the Hunger Games, Red Eye horrors books and lots of other YA staples, my 13-year-old daughter is at a loss for what to read next. And she’s in the mood for a bit of a change. She used to really love family stories, for instance:
* The House At World’s End series by Monica Dickens
* The Bell Family by Noel Streatfeild
* I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith
While she has the reading comprehension of an adult, she’s a bit too young to read properly adult equivalents such as The Camomile Lawn or The Cazalet Chronicles.
Can anyone recommend some good family stories for a 13-year-old who loves adventure, strong characters, coming-of-age, romance and the other elements of a classic family saga?
They don’t have to be specifically for kids or young adults. But ideally they’d whip along at a good pace and wouldn’t contain sex or violence strong enough to make them unsuitable for a young teen.
Any and all tips much appreciated!
