    1. The Seventh Function of Language by Laurence Binet is a novel which centres around linguistic theories. I should say I really didn’t enjoy this book and found it very dull, but it’s had some good reviews and your friend might like it.

The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber features a linguist and some linguistic themes although it’s not the central topic. Still an enjoyable read though.

The Colony by Audrey Magee focuses on language preservation and dying languages.
