Im a big fan of the books by The Mountain Goats frontman John Darnielle.
I just finished his most recent book The Devil House for the second time and I love it. The book is a meta look at the true crime genre through the eyes of true crime author as we follow his writing process, read excerpts from his previous book, and uncover the murder that he’s writing about.
All of his books focus on subcultures, tragedies, inter-family dynamics, a meta-ness about the subject the book is about and just a deep meditation on life and all of the more subtle feelings and experiences we have.
But again it’s cool to just ready needy books about role playing games and the satanic panic.
Anyone have any good recs for books similar to his?
