I got about 25% through RPO before having to give it up. The premise sounded cool, but the writing was boring and lacking in any depth.
It was nostalgia overload just for the sake of nostalgia with beige prose dragging the story along.
I thought the futuristic, dystopian, VR premise was interesting, but the whole narrative and characters lacked substance.
Anything similar but with more complex themes or character development?
Thanks all!

Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson
It’s a dystopian future with immersive VR, but Sumerian mythology and the development of language instead of 80s pop culture. Snow Crash is probably the book that inspired Ready Player One, and it’s definitely the reason that the Metaverse has that name.
